Katharina Heidkamp presents the JOKOTAI on March 23, 2022

Katharina Heidkamp will present the JOKOTAI Material Impact Screener in the “Rakentamisen hiilijalanjälki ja elinkaarilaskenta” seminar on March 23, 2022.

The seminar is focused on tools for lifecycle analysis and for the evaluation of the carbon footprint in building and construction. The seminar is organized by Eko Safa together with Yrittäjä Safa. It will be conducted mainly in Finnish. The event will take place on the Tiedekulma building in Helsinki. It will be streamed to make it accessible also online. It is free and open to all.

JOKOTAI Material Impact Screener

The JOKOTAI Material Impact Screener is an early assessment tool for evaluating the environmental impact of alternative material and structural choices in a building project. The tool makes it possible for designers, clients and all parties involved in a building project to better comprehend the impact of alternative material and structural choices on the sustainability of the project. It is a free web-based tool.

The JOKOTAI Material Impact Screener was developed by OOPEAA in partnership with the Obayashi Corporation with support from the Growth and Development from Wood Program coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Finland.

JOKOTAI is about visualizing and making transparent basic information regarding a building project. It is not a tool for creating a full life cycle analysis. Nor is it intended as a drawing tool. Instead, it provides an assessment tool to be used in the early stages of design prior to having made decisions that at a later stage will make it possible to perform a proper life cycle analysis.

A Tool for the Early Design Phase

The most important motivation for creating the JOKOTAI tool was the need to create a tool that could be used early on in the design process, before there is a BIM model. We should be able to evaluate the impact of alternative material choices already at the outset of a project, and we need to be able to assess them with reliable data in order to be able to make informed decisions.

In addition, OOPEAA wanted to make visible the sources of data used and to show the basis for the calculation, so that they are transparent to the user. The result breakdown identifies the most contributing material choices in terms of CO2 emissions and primary energy demand during production. The calculated environmental impact of the production phase (A1-3) is complemented by additional information about the expected service life, production process and recycling potential of materials. The carbon storage is indicated as a separate element so that it can be seen clearly on its own.
